What Is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression?

Non-surgical spinal decompression is a computer-controlled traction therapy that applies gentle, rhythmic distraction forces to specific spinal segments. Unlike traditional traction, the treatment table uses real-time biofeedback to modulate the force preventing the muscle guarding that can limit the effectiveness of older traction devices.

The goal is to create a negative intradiscal pressure within the affected disc. This negative pressure draws herniated or bulging disc material back towards the centre of the disc, and simultaneously encourages the inflow of oxygen, water and nutrients that the disc needs to heal.

At DC Physiotherapy we combine decompression with targeted physiotherapy addressing the muscular imbalances and movement patterns that contributed to the disc problem in the first place.

How the Treatment Works

Each session follows a structured protocol tailored to your diagnosis and response to treatment.

Assessment & Diagnosis

A detailed clinical assessment identifies the affected disc level, the nature of the compression, and any contraindications. We review any MRI or CT imaging you have.

Table Setup & Positioning

You lie comfortably on the decompression table. A pelvic harness is fitted and the table is configured for lumbar or cervical decompression depending on your condition.

Decompression Cycles

The table applies a series of distraction and relaxation cycles over approximately 20–25 minutes. Force levels are set precisely for your body weight and disc level.

Physiotherapy Integration

Following decompression, targeted physiotherapy exercises and manual therapy reinforce the gains made during the session and build long-term spinal stability.

Are You a Suitable Candidate?

Most patients with disc-related back or neck pain are suitable for decompression therapy. A thorough assessment will confirm whether it is right for you.

Likely suitable if you have:

  • Diagnosed disc herniation, bulging disc or sciatica
  • Chronic lower back or neck pain lasting more than 6 weeks
  • Leg or arm pain, numbness or tingling from nerve compression

  • Wish to avoid surgery or epidural steroid injections

Not suitable if you have:

  • Spinal fracture or severe osteoporosis
